The phrase “Gam Zu L’tovah” (“This too is for the best”) comes from the teachings of the sage Nachum Ish Gamzu, who lived with unshakable faith that everything in life, no matter how painful or confusing, ultimately serves a higher purpose.

In one of the most famous tales, Nachum Ish Gamzu was sent to present a treasure to the Roman Emperor. Along the way, an innkeeper stole the valuables and replaced them with ordinary sand. When the emperor discovered the “gift,” he was furious and prepared to punish Nachum. But a minister—who was, in truth, Elijah the Prophet in disguise—suggested that perhaps the sand was not ordinary at all, but the same miraculous sand that Abraham had used to win a battle.

The emperor tested it—and the sand transformed into arrows, enabling him to win a critical war. Overjoyed, he rewarded Nachum generously. The story reveals that what first seemed like a calamity was actually a divine blessing in disguise.

The moral of Gam Zu L’tova is one of profound emunah (faith)—trusting that every event, even those that seem unjust or painful, is part of a benevolent and greater divine plan. Nachum’s unwavering belief turned apparent disaster into triumph, while the innkeeper’s greed led to his downfall.
