DID YOU KNOW THAT...

King Solomon Tokens

As early as the 6th–7th century AD, Christian pilgrims carried King Solomon talismans for protection. The simplest of these were small clay charms, measuring only half an inch. Known as Eulogiai or Blessings, these talismans bore the name of Solomon alongside depictions of Solomonic roots—believed to have the power to drive out demons and heal diseases.

The first-century Jewish historian Josephus recorded an account of a man cured of a demonic spell when a shaman invoked Solomon’s name and had the afflicted man inhale from “a ring which had under its seal one of the roots prescribed by Solomon”. These charms were meant to ensure a pilgrim’s safety, and in some cases, they were rubbed or scraped to activate their power.

During the Byzantine period, the burial site of Solomon and David was thought to be about half a mile from Bethlehem. It is likely that these talismans were produced and sold there, providing travelers with a tangible link to Solomon’s legendary wisdom and protection.
