This is an ancient talisman with roots in ancient lore and with multiple traces in ancient and medieval history. The earliest written witness is a treatise composed by a physician in the 3rd century CE that contains a detailed description of the Abracadabra talisman and prescribes wearing it in order to heal the patient's fever. Still, it is believed that the widespread application of the Abracadabra talisman in Roman empire for healing severe medical conditions started at least a century earlier - during the reign of Hadrian.
The metaphysical roots of the Abracadabra talisman have Kabbalistic flavor. The Hebrew letters B R K D B R may also be read from right to left, R B D K R B, as would be proper for text in Hebrew. This way more hidden meanings are revealed. One of them flows from reading right to left as RB KD RB - “arba kad arba”, or “FOUR is a master over four”. Here FOUR means Tetragrammaton, the metaphysical G-d's name and the second four means the 4 elements. Thus the inscription states that G-d is the master of the 4 elements and reflects the power of the talisman as a protector against forces of nature.
