Vav Hey Vav (והו) - Healing the Past, Living Fully in the Present

Vav Hey Vav (והו) - Healing the Past, Living Fully in the Present - Name #1

Have you noticed that Vav Hey Vav (והו) appears twice among the 72 Names?

This is not a mistake. The same three-letter combination appears in two different places and is traditionally associated with different spiritual purposes. The first appearance, Name #1, is connected with healing the influence of the past, while the second appearance, Name #49, is associated with true happiness and finding joy within. Each deserves to be explored on its own.

Healing the Past

The first appearance of Vav Hey Vav (והו), in the first position of the sequence, is traditionally associated with healing the influence of the past.

Many of the difficulties we experience today may have roots that reach much further back than the present moment. Experiences that hurt us, mistakes we made knowingly or unknowingly, difficult beginnings, and unresolved patterns can continue to influence the way we think, feel, and respond to life.

Over time, these influences can become deeply established. They may appear as repeating situations, familiar emotional reactions, recurring obstacles, or patterns that seem to draw us back into the same kinds of difficulties.

The first appearance of Vav Hey Vav (והו), in the first position of the sequence, is traditionally associated with healing the influence of the past.

Working consciously with Vav Hey Vav invites us to look beneath those patterns and search for their deeper roots.

In Kabbalistic meditation, this Name is sometimes described as a symbolic form of “time travel”: returning in awareness to the point where a negative pattern began in order to transform its influence.

The idea is not that we literally travel backward through time. Rather, we revisit an earlier experience through focused awareness and spiritual intention, bringing a different quality of consciousness to what happened.

This makes Vav Hey Vav particularly connected with teshuvah - the process of return, correction, and inner transformation.

Changing the Influence of the Past

Changing the Influence of the Past

The purpose of this work is not to erase history or pretend that something painful never happened.

It is to recognize how an old experience may still be shaping the present.

A mistake can continue to influence us through guilt. A painful experience can become a pattern of fear. A difficult beginning can develop into a belief about ourselves that we carry for years.

Through focused inner work, we can begin to separate the original experience from the patterns that grew around it.

This is where the symbolism of Vav Hey Vav becomes especially powerful: by bringing Light and awareness to the roots of a pattern, we can begin to change the way it continues to live within us.

The past remains part of our story, but it does not have to remain in control of our present.

The Symbolism of the Letters

The three letters of the Name also carry symbolic associations.

Vav is traditionally understood as a connector, a letter that links and joins. Hey is associated with Divine breath, expression, and revelation.

Together, the sequence can be contemplated as a bridge between what has been and what is becoming - connecting human experience with Divine Light and creating space for correction and renewal.

This symbolism helps explain why Vav Hey Vav is so closely associated with returning to the roots of a difficulty and restoring a sense of wholeness.

The Grace to Correct

This understanding of Vav Hey Vav is also connected with the idea of Divine compassion and the possibility of correction.

In The Roots of Names, Rabbi Moshe Zechuta (HaRemez) associates this Name with the verse:

“The Lord is good to all; he has compassion on all he has made.” Psalm 145:9

The verse points toward a Divine quality of compassion that extends even to our mistakes and shortcomings.

Within this tradition, that compassion creates the possibility for teshuvah, correction, and renewal - even when the consequences of our choices have followed us for many years.

What has been done cannot be undone in a literal sense. But our inner relationship with it can change. We can recognize, understand, correct, and transform what has continued to influence our lives.

That is where the deeper promise of this Name lies.

Working With Vav Hey Vav

Then bring to mind a past experience, mistake, emotional pattern, or difficult situation that you feel continues to affect your present.

Then bring to mind a past experience, mistake, emotional pattern, or difficult situation that you feel continues to affect your present.

Rather than becoming absorbed in the story itself, gently focus on its point of origin.

What happened?
What pattern began there?
What are you still carrying from it?

Now bring Light, awareness, and compassion to that earlier point.

In the language of this tradition, this is the symbolic “time travel” of Vav Hey Vav: returning in consciousness to the place where a pattern took root and allowing a different quality of awareness to meet it.

Meditation Intention

You may use the following intention as part of your meditation:

I acknowledge what the past has taught me and release its hold on my present. I bring Light and compassion to old patterns, allowing their influence to transform. I keep the wisdom I have gained while opening myself to greater freedom, awareness, joy, and fulfillment.

Allow yourself to recognize what happened without becoming trapped in guilt or self-judgment. The intention is to move from recognition toward correction, release, and renewal.

Finally, bring your attention back to the present.

Living Fully in the Present

Healing the past is not about remaining focused on yesterday.

It is about becoming freer to live today.

When old regrets, fears, emotional patterns, or unresolved experiences lose some of their power, we can return more fully to the present moment. We can meet our lives with greater openness, vitality, and awareness rather than automatically repeating what came before.

Vav Hey Vav invites us to learn from the past without remaining bound by it.

Its deeper teaching is one of renewal: compassion can make correction possible, awareness can loosen old patterns, and the present can become different even when the past itself cannot be changed.

Sometimes, changing the future begins with the way we are willing to meet the past.
