How Can You Work With the 72 Names?

There is no single way to work with these sacred combinations.

Traditionally, they may be contemplated during meditation, visualized in the mind, written down, or incorporated into sacred objects and amulets.

You might simply sit quietly and focus your attention on the three Hebrew letters of a Name.

Look at each letter slowly.
Allow your attention to settle.
Notice what thoughts, emotions, or insights arise.

You can also carry the Name with you as a physical reminder throughout the day. A talisman bearing the sacred letters can serve as a tangible focal point - something you can return to when you need to reconnect with the quality represented by that particular Name.

The practice is simple. What matters most is consistency and intention.

Finding the Name That Speaks to You

With seventy-two Names to explore, where do you begin?

There are two ways you might approach the Names: through conscious choice or through intuition.

The Conscious Approach

Sometimes the answer is clear.

You may be facing a particular situation - a difficult relationship, uncertainty about your direction, a period of financial concern, a need for protection, or simply a desire for greater inner strength.

Explore the qualities traditionally associated with the different Names and notice which one resonates with what you are experiencing.

You can choose one Name and spend time with it, returning to its letters regularly through meditation and contemplation.

Conscious Approach

The important thing is not to rush from one Name to another. Give yourself time to become familiar with the one you have chosen.

Sometimes we know what is happening, but we don't know what lies beneath it.

A recurring situation may leave us wondering: Why does this keep happening? What am I not seeing? What needs to change within me?

In such moments, you can approach the 72 Names without deciding in advance which one you need.

Take a quiet moment. Breathe. Turn your attention inward and ask yourself:

What quality do I need to bring into my life right now?

Then look through the Names slowly.

Rather than analyzing each one, simply allow your eyes to move across the combinations. Notice if one particular Name catches your attention or feels somehow different from the others.

You don't have to explain why.

Unconscious Approach

Sometimes intuition speaks before the mind has an answer.

A Simple Way to Begin

Once you have chosen a Name, spend a few quiet minutes with it.

Close your eyes and breathe slowly. Bring the three Hebrew letters to mind and visualize them clearly. You may imagine them surrounded by light, or simply allow their shapes to remain in your awareness.

Look at the letters again.

Let your eyes follow their forms.

Allow the meaning associated with the Name to become your focus.

You can also visualize the three letters arranged vertically along the body - from the forehead, through the center of the body, to the feet - using the image as a way to bring your attention inward and create a sense of alignment.

There is no need to force an experience.

The practice is about attention, intention, and returning to the Name again and again.

A Meditation Example: Yud Bet Mem

Yud Bet Mem (יבמ) is the 70th sequence among the 72 Names of G-d, traditionally associated with finding order within chaos and recognizing a greater design beneath confusion and disruption.

When life feels overwhelming, this Name can be used as a visual focus for quieting the mind, stepping away from fear, and creating space to see a situation from a wider perspective.

You do not pronounce the three letters as a word. Instead, allow their forms to become a visual anchor for meditation.

1. Prepare Your Space

Find a quiet place where you can sit comfortably for a few minutes.

Take three slow, deep breaths and allow your attention to settle.

As you begin, set an intention to temporarily release the need to control or immediately solve whatever feels chaotic in your life.

2. Gaze Upon the Letters

Look at the Hebrew sequence יבמ from right to left:

Allow your eyes to move slowly across the three letters. Rather than analyzing their meaning intellectually, simply become familiar with their shapes.

You may imagine the letters illuminated by a soft white or golden light.

Let your attention rest there.

3. Bring the Image Within

After spending some time looking at the letters, close your eyes and bring their image into your mind.

If the image disappears, simply open your eyes and look at the letters again before returning to the visualization.

Allow the image to become a quiet point of focus as thoughts begin to settle.

You may imagine the light surrounding the letters becoming a source of clarity and calm as you bring your attention to areas of confusion, fear, or uncertainty.

There is no need to force a particular experience. Simply observe what arises.

4. Hold the Intention

As you meditate on יבמ, you may hold a simple thought such as:

Behind what appears to be chaos, there may be an order I cannot yet see. I allow myself to become still enough to recognize it.

Stay with the letters and the intention for as long as feels natural.

When you are ready, take a few slow breaths and return your attention to the present moment.

Working With a Talisman

A physical talisman can become an extension of this practice.

Rather than replacing meditation, it gives you something tangible to return to throughout the day. You might wear it, hold it during meditation, or simply look at the sacred letters whenever you feel yourself becoming overwhelmed.

For Yud Bet Mem, the talisman can serve as a reminder to pause before reacting, step back from confusion, and look for the larger pattern.

Sometimes clarity does not come from finding an immediate answer.

It comes from becoming quiet enough to see what was there all along.

A Personal Practice

The 72 Names are not simply something to read about. They can become a personal practice - a way of bringing intention, awareness, and reflection into everyday life.

You don't need to work with all seventy-two at once.

Choose one.
Spend time with it.
Return to it.

Let the journey unfold naturally.

There is no need to have all the answers before you begin.
